Previously scooped by TrekMovie.com last August, it’s now been confirmed that Avatar actress Zoe Saldana has signed on to play the role of Uhura in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek.

The actress joins Zachary Quinto (young Spock), Anton Yelchin (young Chekov) and Leonard Nimoy (Spock).

In the TV and film series, Uhura served as the chief communications officer on the USS Enterprise.

The (expected) title role of a young James Kirk (portrayed by William Shatner in the TV and film series) has not yet been cast.

Star Trek (2008) hits theaters on December 25, 2008. Abrams will be serving as both director and producer on the project, which will be executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (who also penned the script) along with Bryan Burk and Damon Lindelof.
