Showtime has given an early second season renewal to their freshman comedy series Californication.

The series, which stars David Duchovny as a struggling writer, premiered to a strong 550,000 viewers, and managed to increase its viewership the week after.  The show continues to draw solid ratings and recent episodes have continued to pace ahead of the series premiere.

Showtime says that when weekly runs are added up (first-run plus all repeats), the series is averaging just under 2 million viewers.

12 episodes were ordered, with production set to begin next April, with the new season likely to premiere next Summer.
