Many expected High School Musical 2 to do well on Friday, given the first one was a hit for Disney both in television and in the DVD market, but it’s doubtful anyone expected it to reach more than 17 million viewers.

That’s right, an amazing 17.24 million viewers tuned into the Disney channel movie last night, making the program the most-watched basic cable telecast ever.

Watched by more than 9.4 million homes, the program also holds records as the most-watched TV movie ever with kids 6-11 (6.1 million), and most-watched ever with kids 9-14 (5.9 million).
