The team behind CBS drama Criminal Minds has found their Mandy Patinkin replacement. Joe Mantegna has joined the show.

Harvey Keitel had previously been expected to fill the role, but negotiations between the two sides fell apart.

The announcement was made yesterday (Friday) by executive producer Ed Bernero on the Criminal Minds Fanatic Blog, where he also downplayed prior news and rumors that Keitel was going to sign on. Entertainment Weekly though has learned that the actor was a near-lock, but negotiations fell through over his demands for creative control and perks.

Here’s the casting announcement from Bernero:

“We are very excited to
tell you all that Joe Mantegna is officially joining
the cast of Criminal Minds. Thanks for hanging with
us, everyone. Ed Bernero”

Considering the sudden departure of the lead star from the show, I think the Criminal Minds crew did a very good job in finding a great replacement for the hit series.
