The latest installment in the Die Hard franchise, Live Free or Die Hard, opened with a comfortable $9.11 million on Wednesday, with the studio happy with the first feedback received from early exit polling from moviegoers.

The 20th Century Fox film opened in 3,172 theaters. Strong Wednesday and Thursday box office receipts are being counted on by the studio, since it’ll be going up against against the kid/family friendly and well reviewed Disney/Pixar film Ratatouille on Friday.

Based on these early Wednesday estimates, expect ‘Die Hard‘ to pocket an additional $30-35 million from Friday to Sunday, bringing its total five-day take to around $50-55 million.

Looking at Disney/Pixar’s track record, Ratatouille should take first place over the weekend with somewhere between $55-60 million.
