Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End expectedly took the top spot over the weekend, despite a lower than expected three-day take.
Pirates III banked $114.73 million from Friday to Sunday. It made an additional $13.24 million during Thursday sneak peaks. The film debuted on a record 4,362 theaters (over 11,000 screens).
From Friday to Monday, the film took in $139.80 million, easily surpassing the Memorial Day four-day weekend record previously held by X-Men: The Last Stand ($122.86 million).
There is no doubt that opening the film a night early hurt the movies chances at breaking the three-day record, but it still would not have been enough to beat Spider-Man 3’s $151.12 million. Including the Thursday it falls short of Spider-Man 3 by more than $20M ($127.97M vs. $151.12M).
Disney can take comfort though in the film’s strong overseas strength and overall international power, with the film in hold of the best six-day international total in history ($404.04M). The breakdown goes as follows: $153.04 million domestically and $251M from overseas receipts.
It stands as the fifth largest domestic weekend (three-day) total of all time (behind Spider-Man 3 — $151.12M, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest — $135.63M, Shrek the Third — $121.63M and Spider-Man — $114.84M).
The only other new film in the charts was Lion Gate Films’ Bug which took in $3.25 million from 1,661 theaters.
Elsewhere on the chart, last week’s number one film Shrek the Third shed a rather larger 56.4% week-to-week, moving to second place with a take of $53.04M from 4,172 theaters. Despite adding an additional 50 theaters, it still went through that large drop. 2004’s Shrek 2 did much better in its second week, dipping only 33.2% while grossing a record (for a second week release) $72.17M.
Shrek the Third’s total stands at a still respectable $217.35M through 11 days of release.
And lastly, the other big summer release, Spider-Man 3 had another 50%+ drop (50.6%), taking in $14.36M from 3,723 theaters in its fourth weekend ($303.98M through 24 days of release). Though it increasingly looks likely it won’t hit the $400M mark, the film is doing incredible business overseas, having just passed the $500M mark. It’s total domestic and foreign take breaks down thusly: $307.75M domestic and $501M overseas for $808.75M.
