According to Variety, Robert Rodriquez (director of the recently released “Planet Terror” part of the film Grindhouse) has been chosen to helm the 2008 Universal release of Barbarella.

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade will serve as writers for the remake of the 1968 film starring Jane Fonda as a futuristic mercenary.  Dino De Laurentiis will be returning to produce the film (he co-produced the original alongside Martha De Laurentiis).

“I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I’m truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe,” Rodriguez said.

Dino De Laurentiis added: “In our vision, the future is female, and I can’t wait to introduce ‘Barbarella’ to a new generation of moviegoers,” he said.
