Strong Start for Shrek the Third, On Pace for 100M+ Weekend May 19, 2007 6:31 pm

Shrek the Third may be getting horrible reviews from the press and fans alike (44% rating among Critics at Rotten Tomatoes — 58% among fans), but that negativity sure isn’t spreading to the box office, as the film grossed an estimated $38.10M on Friday.
Sneak previews on Thursday night adds another $907,000 to the total.
Other outlets are reporting slightly higher grosses of between $39 and $40 million. This is a very good start to the weekend, and another monster hit for the box office this summer season.
In other box office news, in its third week Spider-Man 3 grossed $8.00M on Friday, taking its total domestic gross to $261.36M through 15 days of release.
If you ask me, it certainly seems like Spider-Man 3 has an uphill climb ahead of itself and may not be able to match the total domestic grosses of the previous flicks in the franchise ($403.71 for Spider-Man and $373.59M for Spider-Man 3). Looks like Sony may have overspent a bit on this film ($258M production budget, which does not include the advertising).
Studio estimates will be released tomorrow, with studio actuals following on Monday.
