With Rachel Weisz opting not to return to The Mummy franchise, the studio had to set out looking for her replacement. They’ve found her in Maria Bello.

Bello, most recently seen in Flicka and World Trade Center, has been cast to replace Rachel Weisz as the character of Evelyn Carnahan O’Connell. She joins previously cast actors Brendan Fraser, Luke Ford, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh.

Mummy 3 will be directed by Rob Cohen, from a script penned by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. The film is still on track for a summer 2008 release.

The movie will have the O’Connell’s and their grown up son (Ford) traveling to China and the Himalayas, where they come face to face with a shape-shifting mummy (a former Chinese Emperor–Jet Li) who was cursed by a wizard (Yeoh).

It’s too bad Rachel Weisz isn’t playing. In my opinion, only she can play Evy O’Connell. Let’s hope “The Mummy 3” gains some attraction.

What was the studio and director thinking of?!? Why replace a great group of actors who has a great on-screen chemistry! I am going to miss Rachel. I read that Rachel was willing but had conflicts. Couldn’t they have postponed filming til Rachel was okay in her schedule???
