NBC has renewed Friday Night Lights, giving the freshman drama which has struggled in the ratings, a full second season order.

Though the show performed poorly in the ratings averaging only a 2.3/6 among advertiser friendly A18-49 demographic and 6.1 million viewers, acclaim for the show was and remains high.  Given the weak debut of the series, NBC believes the low ratings are attributed to factors other than quality, and are hopeful they can groom the series into a mild hit.

Friday Night Lights premiered on  October 3, 2006 with lackluster ratings (4.7/8 household rating, 7.17M viewers and a 2.7/8 A18-49 rating).  Given the low numbers for a series return (and the show was consistent half-hour to half-hour), it makes sense that NBC will attempt to increase the audience.  To note, the season finale drew the following ratings: 4.1/7 household rating, 6.26M viewers and a 2.1/6 A18-49 rating.

I am so thrilled to hear Friday Night Lights will be back next season. It was so good and so well produced that I could not miss one show. The quality of the show surpassed all drama shows on TV. I can’t wait for the next season.
