According to Variety, Paramount will be bringing back Eddie Murphy in “Beverly Hills Cop IV” to reprise the role of Axel Foley.  Lorenzo di Bonaventura will serve as producer of the film.

The first “Beverly Hills Cop” movie was released in 1984 and went on to become a major success, grossing more than $234.76M domestically and $81.60M overseas.

There were two other installments, with the second doing equally strong business ($153.66M domestically, plus $146.30M overseas) three years later, before the franchise fizzled out with the third installment in 1994, which failed to crack the $45M mark domestically.

“Axel Foley is one of the great action-comedy characters, a character that Eddie loves. I’m lucky enough to help bring it back,” di Bonaventura said. “This genre is missing from the landscape.”

Jerry Bruckheimer, who was part of the first two films, will not be involved with the fourth installment.
