Weekend Box Office Numbers (Feb. 26-28, 2010): Shutter Island ($22.7M) tops Cop Out ($18.2M) & The Crazies ($16.1M); Avatar crosses $700M ($13.7M / $706.6M cume)

Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island dropped just 44.8% in its second weekend ($22.665M), topping both newcomers Cop Out ($18.211M) and The Crazies. ($16.067M).

Marking not only Kevin Smith’s first film he didn’t also write, Cop Out is now the biggest opening (single day and weekend) in his career as a director. Cop Out and The Crazies had nearly identical Friday’s ($5.948M & $5.981M, respectively), but Cop Out pulled ahead with a stronger Saturday ($7.742M vs. $6.347M for The Crazies) and Sunday ($4.521M vs. $3.739M for The Crazies).  However, The Crazies played in fewer theaters and therefore had a considerably stronger per theater average of $6,489 (2,476 theaters) vs. a PTA of $5,781 for Cop Out (from 3,150 theaters).

The other big news this weekend is that Avatar broke $700 million. Now in its 11th weekend of release (top 5 in each weekend), the James Cameron-directed sci-fi 3D epic continues to live up to its billing, adding $13.655 million (down just 15.9%) which brings its 73-day domestic cume to $706.56 million. Avatar broke $700 million on Saturday (its 72nd day). Worldwide, Avatar remained in 1st place for its 11th consecutive week (a streak that will come to an end next weekend courtesy Alice in Wonderland) and is sitting at an extraordinary $2.546 billion worldwide ($1.839B of which comes from overseas grosses). After a strong opening last weekend, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island was down less than 46% this weekend and managed to hold off two newcomers for a solid estimated $22.2 million (est. $75.076 million domestic cume). The film grossed an estimated $6.68M on Friday, grew an impressive 55% on Saturday to an estimated $10.363M and Warner Brothers is projecting a Sunday take of $5.157 million.

In the battle of openers, the Kevin Smith-directed R-rated buddy cop comedy Cop Out starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan grossed an estimated $18.565 million, holding off Breck Eisner’s horror remake The Crazies ($16.521 million).   Cop Out — which marks the first film Kevin Smith has directed that he also didn’t write — is the biggest opening (single day and weekend) in Kevin Smith’s career as a director. Both films had identical Friday estimates ($5.98M), but Cop Out pulled ahead with a stronger Saturday (est. $7.76M vs. an estimated $6.35M for The Crazies).  Cop Out is projected to have a stronger Sunday ($4.825M) than The Crazies ($4.191M).

The other big news this weekend is that Avatar broke $700 million.  Now in its 11th weekend of release (top 5 in each weekend), the James Cameron-directed sci-fi 3D epic continues to live up to its billing, grossing an estimated $14.0 million (down less than 14%) which brings its 73-day domestic cume to $706.904 million.  Avatar broke $700 million on Saturday (its 72nd day).  Worldwide figures haven’t been updated yet, but at the moment Avatar is sitting just shy of $2.5B at $2.482 billion ($1.775B of which comes from overseas grosses). Box Office Numbers for Friday, February 26, 2010: Shutter Island ($6.7M) holds onto first place, Cop-Out ($5.975M) & The Crazies ($5.97M) battle for 2nd

After a strong opening last Friday, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island had a nice hold in its second Friday with an estimated $6.675 million ($59.551 million domestic cume).  The film held off two openers; Kevin Smith’s buddy cop comedy Cop Out ($5.975 million) and Breck Eisner’s remake of The Crazies ($5.97 million). [Note: In the final numbers, The Crazies topped Cop Out on Saturday.  Cop Out still placed #2 for the weekend.  See updated chart below the jump for Friday finals].

Meanwhile, Avatar took fourth for the day with an estimated $3.1 million.  That puts the film’s domestic cume at $696.005 million and the film will clear $700 million sometime tonight (in just 72 days of release). Head on over the jump for the daily chart.

The Crazies: New Trailer and Character Posters

Overture Films has released a new trailer — along with three new character posters — for the upcoming remake of the 1972 George Romero classic The Crazies.  The film stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha MItchell, Danielle Panabaker and Joe Anderson and was directed by Breck Eisner.  Head on over the jump to watch the trailer and see the three posters in full.
