Weekend Box Office (Feb. 5-7, 2010): Dear John ($30.5M) Beats Avatar ($22.85M); From Paris with Love ($8.2M) Disappoints

The romantic drama Dear John unexpectedly beat Avatar over the weekend, grossing an impressive $30.469 million to Avatar‘s $22.851 million. Before these finals were released, Avatar had actually grossed just enough to become the new eighth weekend record holder, but it fell just short of Titanic‘s record.

But don’t feel bad for Cameron and crew, including overseas receipts of $1.58 billion and domestic receipts of $629.344 million, Avatar stands at a massive $2.209 billion, which means it added an incredible $166 million over the course of the last week (Monday-Sunday).

The other new release was the Pierre Morel action drama From Paris with Love starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.  The $52-million budgeted film disappointed with only $8.159 million from 2,722 theaters.  Head on over the jump for the weekend chart.

Friday Box Office Estimates (2/5/2010): Dear John Opens in First With $13.8M; Avatar Second With $6.2M, From Paris with Love Opens Poorly With $3.0M

Original article follows below.

Screen Gems’ romantic drama Dear John starring Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum unexpectedly eclipsed Avatar in its opening day, drawing an impressive estimated $13.8 million to Avatar‘s estimated $6.2 million.  After seven straight weekends at #1, Avatar will not carry the weekend. The new domestic cume for the film — through 50 days — is now $612.693 million.  Overseas numbers for Friday have not yet been released, but through Thursday Avatar had grossed $1.499 billion overseas which would put its current worldwide cume at $2.112 billion.

Dear John should gross somewhere around $30-35 million, but Avatar will still have an incredibly solid eighth weekend with $20-25 million which means there’s still a shot at it breaking the eighth weekend box office record (Titanic‘s $23.028 million).

The other new release this weekend was Pierre Morel’s From Paris with Love, and the film failed to deliver the sort of numbers Morel’s last feature (Taken) took in.  The John Travolta/Jonathan Rhys Meyers action drama took in a very disappointing $3.0 million on Friday and is only expected to gross $7-9 million for the weekend.  That’s a far cry from last year’s Taken ($24.717 million). Head on over the jump for more analysis and the daily chart.
