ABC Family continues to grow its program offerings and has acquired the network television premiere rights to the blockbuster “The Hunger Games” in a deal with Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), a leading diversified global entertainment company, the two companies announced today. The announcement comes on the heels of “The Hunger Games’” record-shattering debut, with an estimated $155 million at the North American box office this past weekend, the third highest-grossing opening weekend of all time.
The acquisition, which also includes the network television premiere rights to “Catching Fire,” the second movie in the franchise, was announced today by Michael Riley, president of ABC Family, and Jim Packer, Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television and Digital Distribution. The deal gives ABC Family the rights to be the basic cable home for the first two movies of “The Hunger Games” franchise. The films will begin airing on ABC Family in 2014.

Michael Riley, president ABC Family, announced today that the network has picked up a third season of its hit original series “Pretty Little Liars.” The all new season will consist of 24 one-hour episodes that will start to air mid 2012. “Pretty Little Liars” is set to return on ABC Family with the rest of season two on Monday, January 2nd at 8:00 – 9:00 PM ET/PT.

ABC Family will ring in the New Year with the world premiere of a new one hour drama, “Jane By Design,” and with all-new episodes of returning original hit series “Switched at Birth,” “Pretty Little Liars” and “The Lying Game,” all set to premiere the first week of January 2012.

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) and Disney-ABC Television Group [announced] that they recently entered into an extension of their previous existing licensing agreement. The extension allows Netflix to continue to stream hundreds of library episodes from ABC Studios, Disney Channel and ABC Family over the Internet. As part of the deal, Netflix is also adding new content to its lineup of Disney-ABC series and TV movies.

ABC Family has acquired the Walt Disney Pictures film “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” from Disney-ABC Domestic Television, it was announced today by Tom Zappala, executive vice president, Program Acquisitions & Scheduling, ABC Cable Networks Group. The deal gives ABC Family the first-window rights to the network television premiere. The film is slated to premiere on the network in 2013.

ABC Family has given new season orders to two of the network’s hit series, “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” which has been renewed for a fourth season, and “Pretty Little Liars,” which was picked-up for a second season. The new season orders were announced today by ABC Family President Michael Riley at the network’s TCA panel at The Langham Hotel in Pasadena.

ABC Family has renewed the dramedy series Greek for a 4th season. The cable network has given the show a 10-episode order, with season four expected to return later this year.
Season three saw double-digit gains from the season prior in most key demos, including a 22% gain among persons 18-34.
