Darren Aronofsky will direct Wolverine 2, Filming to begin in March

Deadline is reporting that Darren Aronofsky’s deal to direct X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 is close enough to being completed that 20th Century Fox has turned their attention to filming. The site reports that shooting will get underway this March in New York “so the filmmaker and Hugh Jackman don’t have to inconvenience their families.”

Darren Aronofksy offered director’s chair for Wolverine 2

Deadline is reporting that Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan”, “The Wrestler”) is in negotiations with 20th Century Fox to direct the sequel to 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

This is by no means a done-deal, however, a fact made all the more evident with Deadline’s quick update:

Don’t dress just yet for the Darren Aronofsky-directed […]

Darren Aronofsky added to shortlist of potential Wolverine 2 directors + Updates on director hunt for Deadpool and Liebesman will direct Clash of the Titans 2 [UPDATE]

Deadline is reporting that Darren Aronofsky is being targeted, along with David Slade, as a potential director for X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2. Last week it was reported that David Slade, along with Robert Schwentke, were two of the studio’s top choices for the film. Deadline confirms that Schwentke was in the mix — and was going to meet with star Hugh Jackman — but has since opted out of the competition. Slade continues to be the frontrunner:

On the X-Men: Wolverine 2 front, 20th Century Fox is between David Slade and Darren Aronofsky, I’m told. Slade, who just directed the summer hit The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, met over the weekend with Jackman on location where he is shooting Real Steel for DreamWorks. Aronofsky has also been talking with Jackman, and they have a good relationship that dates back to The Fountain, when Jackman stepped in after Brad Pitt dropped out. Jackman holds a lot of clout in the decision and while Aronofsky has some momentum of his own because of Black Swan, I’d say Slade has the edge.

In other director news, Warner Brother and Legendary Pictures are still working out a deal with Jonathan Liebesman to direct a sequel [UPDATE: Variety and Heat Vision are reporting that Liebesman has signed onto the project] to the nearly $500M-grossing worldwide hit Clash of the Titans (Louis Leterrier won’t return to direct the sequel):

I’m told they are far apart on money. Leterrier has been meeting on blockbusters, and was Fox’s fall back choice after the studio met directors for X-Men Origins: First Class when Matthew Vaughn dropped out for a weekend, and then came back to accept the assignment.

News on the Deadpool project after the jump.

Laura Shuler Donner on the Future of the X-Men Franchise

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner spoke with Empire about the future of several of the X-Men franchise films, including ‘Wolverine 2’, ‘Magneto’, ‘Deadpool’ and X-Men: First Class.  Here are a few excerpts, beginning with thoughts on ‘Wolverine 2’, which is furthest along:

“That’s the furthest along of all the X-Men projects on the boil. It’s actually the story we wanted to use for the first Wolverine film, but [Fox head honcho] Tom Rothman preferred to set the character up with an origin story first. This movie will really focus on the relationship between Wolverine and Mariko, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord, and what happens to him in Japan. We’re very fortunate to have a story mostly outlined for us [from the comic book arc co-written by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller]. And we wanted an A+ writer, so we want to Chris McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects). He came in and has tightened the story and got really immersed in the whole thing – he’s in Japan in his head!”
