Showtime announces eighth and final season of Weeds

The show that introduced America to a pot-dealing soccer mom and changed the face of the network is sparking up its final toke: after eight unforgettable, jaw-dropping seasons, WEEDS is coming to an end. SHOWTIME will air the final 13 episodes beginning Sunday, July 1st at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. In addition, the series will achieve a much-coveted television milestone: the 11th episode of the season will mark the series’ 100th. Created by Jenji Kohan and produced by Lionsgate, WEEDS has been honored with multiple award nominations, including 21 Emmys(R), 10 Golden Globes(R) and six SAG(R) Awards over the course of its seven seasons on air. Its success put SHOWTIME on the map as a destination for top-quality original series and set the stage for hits like DEXTER(R), NURSE JACKIE, CALIFORNICATION and HOMELAND.

Showtime renews The Big C and Weeds

Showtime has announced a second season renewal for The Big C and a seventh season renewal for Weeds:

“The unprecedented viewership for both THE BIG C and WEEDS proves that audiences love these shows as much as we do,“ said SHOWTIME President of Entertainment David Nevins. “There are definitely more comedic adventures in store for these fascinating, complex women. For six seasons, we’ve happily traveled along with Nancy Botwin and we’re equally as excited to follow Laura Linney and THE BIG C team as they chart Cathy’s unique journey through such a provocative and personal subject as cancer. We’re thrilled that these two signature shows will be returning to the network in 2011.”

Weeds is averaging a 0.7/1 HH rating/share, 1.071M viewers and a 0.5/1 A18-49 rating/share through four episodes this season. The Big C, meanwhile, has averaged a 0.6/1 HH rating/share, 993,000 viewers and a 0.5/1 A18-49 rating/share through the same span of episodes.

The full press release is included after the jump.

It’s sort of a half-suit, with half my skin showing, with lots of Russian tattoos, because [Whiplash is just] out of a Russian-zone prison.” [Empire]
  • The second season of Merlin will premiere on BBC One Sunday, June 21st in the UK.  That’s the same date as the U.S. premiere of the first season on NBC. [via TV Squad]
