Syfy Renews Warehouse 13 For Second Season

Syfy has given a second season renewal to its hit freshman drama Warehouse 13.  Thirteen episodes have been ordered for the second season, but Syfy president David Howe told Variety that it could add additional episodes down the line.  Here’s the blurb from the trade:

Warehouse 13 Premiere Draws 3.5 Million Viewers

warehouse13-070809Last night’s premiere of Warehouse 13 on Syfy drew a respectable 3.5 million viewers, making Syfy the #1 most-watched ad-supported cable network in primetime Tuesday night.

Fleshing out the numbers more fully, the two-hour premiere drew a 2.5 HH rating, 1.7 million Adults 25-54 and 1.3 million Adults 18-49.  For comparison purposes, it’s the 3rd highest total viewership for a Syfy original series premiere, trailing only Stargate Atlantis (4.2 million on 7/16/2004) and Eureka (4.1 million on 7/18/2006).

Additionally, it was a stronger performance than the network’s last original series, Sanctuary, topping that series by 29% among viewers, 20% among Adults 18-49 and 15% among Adults 25-54.

One negative aspect I could find was pointed out by TV by the Numbers, who note that while the show out-drew the series finale of Battlestar Galactica by a hefty 1.1 million (2.4 million vs. 3.5 million), Battlestar Galactica managed a heftier 1.6 million viewers in the very key A18-49 demographic (300,000 viewers better than Warehouse 13).

That weaker position among Adults 18-49 and is also reflected in comparisons with other series premieres for the network:

  • Eureka: 1.9 million Adults 25-54, 1.7 million Adults 18-49
  • Stargate Atlantis: 2.5 million Adults 25-54, 2.1 million Adults 18-49

By the way if you haven’t seen it, Syfy (check out the new website at Syfy.com) aired a re-branding video before the premiere of Warehouse 13.  Watch it and check out the official press release for the show’s premiere ratings after the jump.
