Showtime renews The Big C for third season

As the powerful second season of The Big C draws to a shocking conclusion on Monday, September 26th, SHOWTIME has picked up a third season of the critically-acclaimed comedy series starring Laura Linney as a reserved, suburban wife/mother/teacher whose terminal cancer diagnosis forces her to shake up her life and find the light side of a dark situation. Ten new episodes will go into production starting early next year for debut in the second quarter of 2012. The Big C is created and written by Darlene Hunt, who serves as executive producer, along with showrunner Jenny Bicks, Laura Linney, Neal H. Moritz and Vivian Cannon. It is produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Alan Alda to guest-star on Showtime’s The Big C

Emmy-winning actor Alan Alda will guest-star on the  Showtime dark comedy The Big C. Alda will play a oncologist in one episode.

Season two of The Big C premieres on Showtime June 27, 2011 at 10:30 PM (following the premiere of “Weeds”).

Showtime sets return dates for Weeds, The Big C and Secret Diary of a Call Girl

Showtime has set premiere dates for: Secret Diary of a Call Girl (April 7); The Real World (Sunday, June 5); Weeds (Monday, June 27) and The Big C (Monday, June 27).

The network also announced premiere dates for two new series: Gigolos (Thursday, April 7) and Web Therapy (Tuesday, July 19):

Showtime renews The Big C and Weeds

Showtime has announced a second season renewal for The Big C and a seventh season renewal for Weeds:

“The unprecedented viewership for both THE BIG C and WEEDS proves that audiences love these shows as much as we do,“ said SHOWTIME President of Entertainment David Nevins. “There are definitely more comedic adventures in store for these fascinating, complex women. For six seasons, we’ve happily traveled along with Nancy Botwin and we’re equally as excited to follow Laura Linney and THE BIG C team as they chart Cathy’s unique journey through such a provocative and personal subject as cancer. We’re thrilled that these two signature shows will be returning to the network in 2011.”

Weeds is averaging a 0.7/1 HH rating/share, 1.071M viewers and a 0.5/1 A18-49 rating/share through four episodes this season. The Big C, meanwhile, has averaged a 0.6/1 HH rating/share, 993,000 viewers and a 0.5/1 A18-49 rating/share through the same span of episodes.

The Big C delivers Showtime’s highest rated original series premiere in 8 years + Weeds has its best night ever

The Big C premiere – 1.154 million viewers at 10:30 p.m.

THE BIG C delivered SHOWTIME’s largest audience in 8 years for an original series debut (Previously: Odyssey 5 on 6/21/02 with 1.155MM)

At 11:30 p.m.: THE BIG C delivered an additional 429,000. The total night 1.583 million viewers

Meanwhile, Weeds drew 1.262 million viewers for its season six premiere and 629,000 viewers for its 11:00 p.m. encore. The premiere was up 4% from last season (1.217M) and when combined with the encore, this was the comedy’s best night ever with a total of 1.9 million viewers
