ABC’s broadcast of the “84th Annual Academy Awards” attracted an average audience of 39.3 million Total Viewers and posted an 11.7 rating among Adults 18-49, based on Nielsen’s “Fast National” ratings. The 2012 “Oscars” stand as ABC’s most-watched telecast in 2 years – since 3/7/10.

84th Academy Awards nominations announced

Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 24) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar® nominee Jennifer Lawrence.

Sherak and Lawrence, who was nominated for an Academy Award® for her lead performance in “Winter’s Bone,” announced the nominees in 10 of the 24 Award categories at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives. Lists of nominations in all categories were then distributed to the media in attendance and online via the official Academy Awards website, www.oscar.com.

Confirmed: Eddie Murphy to host 84th Academy Awards

Producers Brett Ratner and Don Mischer have confirmed earlier reports that Eddie Murphy will host The 84th Annual Academy Awards:

“I am enormously honored to join the great list of past Academy Award hosts, from Hope and Carson to Crystal, Martin and Goldberg, among others,” said Murphy. “I’m looking forward to working with Brett and Don on creating a show that is enjoyable for both the fans at home and for the audience at the Kodak Theatre, as we all come together to celebrate and recognize the great film contributions and collaborations from the past year.”

Oscars Best Picture category will feature between 5 and 10 movies

The governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted on Tuesday (6/14) to add a new twist to the 2011 Best Picture competition, and a new element of surprise to its annual nominations announcement. The Board voted to institute a system that will now produce anywhere between 5 and 10 nominees in the category. That number won’t be announced until the Best Picture nominees themselves are revealed at the January nominations announcement.
