Dr. Suess’ The Lorax delivers year’s biggest opening weekend with $70.7M; Project X has solid $20.8M debut

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax exceeded all expectations and opened with an estimated $70.7M from 3,729 theaters, delivering the year’s biggest opening weekend. The project opened on Friday to an estimated $17.4M, but exploded to an estimated $31.3M on Saturday (+80%). Universal is projecting a 30% dip on Sunday to $22.0M.

Relativity Media has released the first movie trailer for their upcoming Snow White project, Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Tarsem Singh’s Snow White gets a title: Mirror Mirror

Relativity Media announced today that the long-awaited title for its upcoming spectacular reimagining of the classic Snow White fairy tale is Mirror Mirror. Filming for the comedy action adventure wrapped in mid-September under the stylish direction of Tarsem Singh (Immortals, The Cell). The theatrical release date is set for March 16, 2012.

Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has exited Relativity Media’s reboot of The Crow. Fresnadillo is committed to directing Summit Entertainment’s reboot of Highlander and therefore can’t take on The Crow.

Bradley Cooper exits The Crow remake

Bradley Cooper has exited Relativity Media’s remake of the 1990s comic The Crow. Heat Vision | THR reports Cooper had to exit the project over scheduling conflicts. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is still attached as director.

Sean Bean to play the King in Tarsem Singh’s Snow White project

Sean Bean is in final negotiations to play the King in the untitled Snow White project from director Tarsem Singh.

He’ll star opposite Lily Collins (Snow White), Julia Roberts (Wicked Stepmother) and Armie Hammer (Prince).

The project is scheduled to hit theaters on March 16, 2012.

Comic-Con 2011: Live-action Voltron movie in development

Relativity Media’s President of Worldwide Production Tucker Tooley announced today the studio has optioned the feature film rights for Voltron™ from World Event Productions, and will adapt the live-action big screen version from the 1984 cult-classic animated series Voltron: Defender of the Universe™. The project was brought to Relativity through their deal with Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, whose company will shepherd the project.

Relativity Media has released a new trailer for the upcoming fantasy drama Immortals. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Immortals is scheduled to hit theaters on November 11, 2011. The film stars Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Luke Evans and is directed by Tarsem Singh.
