Nickelodeon, at its annual upfront presentation held today at Jazz at Lincoln Center, unveiled plans for an unprecedented 650 new episodes—the top-ranked network’s most ever—of both brand-new content and returning hits, as well announcing premiere details for the highly anticipated animated series The Legend of Korra; a stop-motion SpongeBob SquarePants Christmas special; original primetime TV movies; casting for the new Nick at Nite series Hollywood Heights (formerly Reach for a Star); an original animated series based on the Raving Rabbids video games; and new projects with UK pop sensation One Direction, iCarly/Victorious show creator Dan Schneider and iCarly star Jennette McCurdy.

Nickelodeon has released a new trailer for the upcoming animated series The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra. Watch the trailer after the jump.
Taking place 70 years after the events of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” this story follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenage girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern “Avatar” world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.
From “Avatar: The Last Airbender” creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra features the voices of Janet Varney, Kiernan Shipka, Daniel Dae Kim, David Faustino, Seychelle Gabriel, Lance Henriksen, P.J. Byrne and J.K. Simmons. The animated series is scheduled to premiere on Nickelodeon later this year.

Nickelodeon orders a second season of the hit telenovela-style, mystery-adventure series House of Anubis, it was announced today by Marjorie Cohn, Nickelodeon’s President, Development and Original Programming. House of Anubis is a new version of the successful Nickelodeon international series recreated and recast for U.S. audiences. Production will commence on 45 new half-hour episodes in Liverpool, England this July with premieres rolling out in a Monday – Friday daily format in 2012.

Nickelodeon orders a third season of the hit live-action comedy Big Time Rush, it was announced today by Marjorie Cohn, Nickelodeon’s President, Development and Original Programming. The series, created by Scott Fellows and produced in partnership with Sony Music, chronicles the adventures and misadventures of four best friends from Minnesota who move to Los Angeles and trade in their hockey sticks and parkas for a chance at music stardom. Starring Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Carlos Pena and Logan Henderson, Big Time Rush will commence production on 20 episodes January 2012.

Nickelodeon, the number-one entertainment brand for kids, has greenlit a fifth season of its mega-hit comedy series iCarly. The new season will roll out in 2012. Launched in 2007, iCarly, has since become a pop culture staple and regularly tops all basic cable and broadcast TV among both kid and adult viewers. Most recently, the show drew 7.4 million total viewers with the episode “iOMG” (Saturday, April 9, at 8 p.m. ET/PT), which also nabbed basic cable’s top spot for the week with viewers P2+. Year-to-date, “iOMG” ranks as the top telecast with all kid and tween demos on all TV and is basic cable’s top kids’ telecast with total viewers. iCarly is created and executive produced by television hitmaker Dan Schneider (Victorious, Zoey 101, Drake & Josh).

Nickelodeon’s 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards (Saturday, April 2, 8-9:30 p.m. ET/PT), featured a slime-tastic return by host actor/comedian Jack Black and ranks as basic cable’s top telecast for the week (March 28, 2011–April 3, 2011) with 7.3 million total viewers. The show also ranks as the week’s top telecast with kids and tweens on all TV, averaging a 9.8/3.5 million K2-11, 12.7/2.7 million K6-11 and 11.7/2.5 million T9-14. The telecast also ranks as the most-watched kids’ show on all TV with viewers (P2+), year to date.

Nickelodeon has acquired the rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, and will begin developing a CG-animated TV series based on the Turtles slated to premiere in 2012. Additionally, sister company Paramount Pictures is working on a feature film also set to debut in 2012. Scott Mednick (300) is producing.
