NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Conference semifinals are most-watched on record

The NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the first two rounds of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs have averaged 1.06 million viewers, making the Conference Quarterfinals and Conference Semifinals the most-watched first two rounds on record (sine 1994, when cable program data started). On NBC, NBC Sports Network and CNBC, the 2012 Conference Semifinals averaged 1.32 million viewers, making them the most-watched Conference Semifinals on record. More than 39 million total viewers have watched the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs on NBC, NBC Sports Network and CNBC, up 23% vs. last year (32.2).

NHL conference quarterfinals are most-watched on record

On the strength of a record 16 overtime games, 32 one-goal games, and a new television format that televised every first-round game nationally for the first time, the Conference Quarterfinals of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs delivered record-setting viewership.

Stanley Cup Final Game 7 is most-watched NHL game in 38 years; 8.54M viewers on NBC

Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final, which saw the Boston Bruins defeat the Vancouver Canucks, 4-0, to claim their first championship since 1972, was watched by 8.54 million people, making it the most-watched NHL game in 38 years, according to official national data released today by The Nielsen Company. The viewership is up three percent from last year’s deciding Game 6 overtime thriller between the Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers and up seven percent compared to the most recent Game 7 in 2009 between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings.

Also, THR reports that the game averaged 8.76M viewers on CBC in Canada and 1.043M viewers on French language RDS. So the total U.S.-Canada audience was 18.34 million viewers.

8.3M watched 2010 Stanley Cup game 6 on NBC; Most-watched NHL game in 36 years

Last night’s game – which saw the Blackhawks defeated the Flyers, 4-3, on a goal by Patrick Kane 4:06 into overtime to give Chicago its first Stanley Cup since 1961 and end the NHL’s longest championship drought – was watched by 8.28 million viewers, the most since 1974 (8.29 million viewers, Boston-Philadelphia, Game 3 on NBC), 43 percent higher than last year’s Game 6 (5.8 million viewers) and four percent higher than last year’s Game 7 (8.0 million).

  • Fox has released the following video of Fringe executive producer Jeff Pinkner discussing the final scene from Tuesday’s season finale.

  • Meanwhile, Fox has decided to discontinue its year-old strategy of airing fewer advertisements at higher prices. Fringe was one of those shows, so next season’s episodes likely won’t run as long. [WSJ]
  • The History Channel has announced their most extensive programming slate in its history, including a 12-part epic called America: The Story of Us chronicling the history of the United States from the pilgrims through to President Obama.   • On the strength of several exciting 7-game series, Versus has seen its NHL playoff numbers increase 18% in total viewers and 26% in men 18-49.  Last week’s game three between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals registered a record-high 1.49 million viewers for the network, making it the most-watched second-round hockey game since 2002 (when ESPN had the NHL rights).
