35.6M viewers tune in to 49ers/Saints duel; Most-watched Saturday NFL Divisional Playoff game since 1988

As Alex Smith hit Vernon Davis on a game-winning, 14-yard TD pass just moments after Drew Brees and the high-powered Saints took the lead, 35.6 million viewers witnessed one of the NFL’s proudest franchise’s secure its first playoff victory in nine years. In addition to being the most-watched Saturday Divisional Playoff since 1988, the game’s 20.5/38 fast-national household rating/share makes it the highest-rated Saturday Divisional Game on any network since 1996 (Packers at 49ers 22.2/42/32.0 million viewers) and is an impressive +21% increase over last year’s Packers at Falcons Saturday night match-up on FOX which earned a 17.0/29 and 30.8 million viewers.

ESPN pulls Hank Williams Jr.’s “Are You Ready for Some Football” open from tonight’s telecast of Monday Night Football

Hank Williams Jr. went on Fox News’ Fox and Friends this morning and compared President Obama to Adolph Hitler. As a result of his comments, ESPN has pulled Williams’ “Are You Ready for some Football” opening on Monday Night Football. The network issued the following statement:

27.2M watch NFL kickoff on NBC; Second-most watched NFL regular season primetime game in 15 years

[Thursday night’s] ‘NFL Kickoff’ was the second-most watched NFL regular season primetime game on any one network in 15 years. The Saints-Packers NFL season opener on NBC was also the second most-watched ‘NFL Kickoff’ ever, the second most-watched regular-season primetime game ever on NBC and the highest Adult 18-49 rating for a primetime NFL regular-season game on any net in 14 years, according to official national data released today by The Nielsen Company.

ESPN and NFL reach eight-year extension for Monday Night Football

Monday Night Football, the most successful series in sports media history, will remain on ESPN through the 2021 NFL season under a new eight-year agreement between ESPN and the National Football League, it was announced today by ESPN and ABC Sports President George Bodenheimer and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The broad multiplatform agreement, which begins in 2014, includes eight full seasons of MNF telecasts, expanded NFL studio programming (beginning this week), highlight rights for TV and ESPN.com, the Pro Bowl, the NFL Draft, 3D rights, and enhanced international rights.

HBO’s Hard Knocks won’t air this season; Will return in 2012

The NFL and HBO Sports have announced that the planned five-episode reality series Hard Knocks will not air this year. The series will, however, return in 2012.

HBO will instead air a special 90-minute episode featuring footage from previous seasons on Wednesday, August 31 at 10 p.m.
