In a move that renews a large portion of television’s #1 primetime lineup, CBS announced today it has picked up 18 returning series for the 2012-2013 broadcast season.
The renewals include four comedies, nine dramas, three reality series and two newsmagazines. The returning shows encompass every night of the week and every hour, many of which are #1 in their time period and some #1 on the entire night.

CBS returned to original programming Monday night after three Monday’s of non-original programming and the network finished with a decisive first place finish, beating its closest two competitors combined in viewers and finishing more than 0.5 point ahead of its nearest competitor in the key A18-49 demographic. The network was paced by “NCIS” which led the night in households, viewers and adults 18-49. Spinoff ‘Los Angeles’ was the night’s 2nd highest-rated program, while “The Good Wife” won its 10PM timeslot. Other original programming included “No Ordinary Family” (up across the board, but likely not enough to get it out of cancellation trouble) and the special ‘Best in Film’ on ABC, “The Biggest Loser” on NBC (a consistent solid performer among A18-49 — #3 for the evening) and the poorly performing comedy “Traffic Light” on Fox, which hit new series lows. NCIS, television’s #1 drama/scripted series for the second consecutive year, has been renewed by the CBS Television Network for the 2011-2012 season, it was announced today by Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment.
“It’s simply amazing that a show in its eighth season continues to perform at such an elite level,” said Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment. ”This is a tribute to the hard work of its talented writers, producers and cast for bringing to life such compelling stories and characters with intrigue and humor. The quality of the storytelling is also evident by the series’ incredibly devoted fan base who we thank for their passion and commitment to NCIS on CBS, in online communities and around the world.”

ABC is pre-empting Cupid next Tuesday, replacing it with an original episode of The Unusuals, which normally airs on Wednesday’s following Lost. The move is an attempt by ABC to give the show a bit more exposure (it’ll lead out of a results episode of Dancing With the Stars).
