NBA Finals delivers highest-rated, most-viewed Game 1 ever on ABC with 16.2M viewers

The 2012 NBA Finals – Oklahoma City Thunder defeated Miami Heat to take 1-0 series lead – delivered the highest-rated, most-viewed Game 1 in ABC history. It generated a 9.9 household rating, 16,195,000 viewers (P2+) and 11,318,000 household impressions, all records, according to Nielsen.

The records surpass the previous marks set for Game 1 of the 2004 Finals – Detroit Pistons at Los Angeles Lakers – 9.8 rating, 15,352,000 viewers and 10,634,000 households. Last night’s game was also the highest-rated telecast of the night, propelling ABC to win the night across all networks (broadcast and cable) in viewership, household impressions and all key demos.

Eastern Conference Finals Game 4 on ESPN delivers highest overnight rating for NBA Playoff game ever on Cable

Sunday night’s NBA Eastern Conference Finals Game 4 on ESPN – in which Boston defeated Miami in overtime to even their series 2-2 – delivered a 7.9 overnight rating, the highest ever for an NBA playoff game on cable (records back to 2003), according to Nielsen. The game peaked with a 10.7 rating during overtime.

NBA season opens with Christmas Day showcases between Mavericks/Heat & Bulls/Lakers

Christmas Day will mark the opening of the 2011-12 NBA season with a special showcase including a blockbuster doubleheader on ABC – a Finals rematch when the NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks and Dirk Nowitzki host the Miami Heat and All-Stars LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on Sunday, Dec. 25, at 2:30 p.m. ET, followed by the Chicago Bulls and league MVP Derrick Rose visiting the Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant at 5 p.m. The Kia NBA Countdown pregame show will preview the ABC doubleheader at 2 p.m.

TNT tips off the 2011-12 NBA season on Christmas Day with the Celtics @ Knicks

TNT will tip off the 2011-12 NBA season with a Christmas Day game featuring the Boston Celtics @ New York Knicks on Sunday, Dec. 25 at Noon (ET). A special hour-long edition of TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by AutoTrader.com precedes the season’s first game at 11 a.m. (ET). The show will feature studio host Ernie Johnson and analysts Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, along with the TNT debut of 15-time NBA All-Star and four-time NBA Champion Shaquille O’Neal previewing the day’s action. Following the pre-game show, the 2011-12 NBA season will get underway with Paul Pierce and the Celtics visiting Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks at Noon (ET) live from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Marv Albert (play-by-play) and Steve Kerr (analyst) will be courtside calling the action, with Craig Sager reporting.

NBC cancels first two weeks of NBA regular season

With the lockout/strike (however you want to look at it) of the NBA still ongoing, NBA commissioner David Stern has officially announced that the first two weeks of the NBA regular season have been canceled.

Biggest audience ever for NBA Draft on ESPN

ESPN’s telecast of the 2011 NBA Draft averaged a 2.4 HH rating and 3.202M viewers, making it the most-viewed NBA Draft in 15 years. The five-hour telecast (from 7:30 p.m.-12:15 a.m.) was up 15% over last year’s telecast (2.789M viewers).

2011 NBA Finals generate highest-rated game 6 ever on ABC

The 2011 NBA Finals Game 6 on ABC – in which the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Miami Heat 105-95 to win the franchise’s first NBA championship – generated a 15.0 overnight rating, the highest-rated Game 6 ever on the network (ESPN reacquired rights to the league in 2002-03), and the highest in 11 years, according to Nielsen. Last night’s Game 6 was the highest-rated program of the night in prime time, propelling ABC to win the night among households. It is the 25th consecutive time The Finals have generated the highest-rated program of the night.

NBA Eastern Conference Finals Game 1 on TNT is most-viewed NBA game in cable history; 11.1M viewers

TNT’s exclusive live coverage of Game #1 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals featuring the Miami Heat @ Chicago Bulls was the most-viewed game in the history of cable television (based on Total Viewership) by delivering 11.1 million total viewers and a 6.2 U.S. HH rating. It is also the most-watched Game #1 of any Conference Finals on cable and was viewed by more people than the previous best of10,829,000 Total Viewers for the 2003 NBA All-Star Game (Michael Jordan’s last All-Star Game).

TNT’s Game #1 of the 2011 Eastern Conference Finals is up over the network’s coverage of Game #1 of the 2010 Western Conference Finals (Phoenix Suns vs. Los Angeles Lakers), delivering a 6.2 U.S. HH rating vs. a 4.4 U.S. HH rating (+41%), 11,109,000 total viewers vs. 7,112,000 (+56%) and 7,166.000 households vs 5,012,000 (+43%).

To date, TNT’s coverage of the NBA Playoffs is up significantly over the network’s coverage from last year, averaging a 3.1 U.S. HH Rating(+29%), 4,989,000 Total Viewers (+33%) and 3,630,000 Households(+30%).

TNT’s Heat/Celtics NBA opening night game is most-watched regular season game ever on Cable; 7.4M viewers

Tipping off one of the most anticipated seasons in the league’s history, TNT’s exclusive doubleheader coverage of opening night of the 2010-11 NBA season delivered record-setting ratings and audience for the network, averaging a 3.5 US rating, 5,493,000 total viewers and 4,025,000 households. The opening game, featuring the Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics, earned a 4.6 US rating and delivered 7,433,000 total viewers and 5,339,000 households, making it the most watched regular season NBA game on cable of all-time (topping the Chicago Bulls vs. LA Lakers on Feb. 2, 1996). Game two of the doubleheader, featuring the Houston Rockets @ Los Angeles Lakers at 10:30 p.m. (ET) delivered a 2.4 US rating, 3,719,000 total viewers and 2,823,000 households, making the doubleheader the most watched NBA Opening Night doubleheader in Turner’s 27 years of tipping off the season.

NBA Finals Game 7 generates highest overnight rating since 1998

ABC’s exclusive coverage of The Finals Game 7 – Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers – delivered an 18.2 overnight rating, the highest-rated NBA game since 1998 (Bulls/Jazz). The overnight rating for last night’s Game 7 marks the highest-rated NBA Finals game ever on ABC (surpassing Lakers/Pistons, Game 5, in 2005 – 15.5 overnight rating; ABC overnight records go back to 2003).

Cavaliers/Celtics game 6 – ESPN’s second most-viewed basketball game

ESPN’s exclusive telecast of the Eastern Conference Semifinal Game 6 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics Thursday, May 13, at 8 p.m. ET earned a 6.6 rating and an average of 6,552,000 households and 8,983,000 viewers to become the network’s second most-viewed basketball game (college or pro). The telecast only trails last year’s Western Conference Final Game 4 between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets (6.9 rating, 6,746,000 households and 9,833,000 viewers). The Cleveland/Boston telecast is ESPN’s highest-rated and most-viewed Conference Semifinal ever, surpassing last year’s Game 6 between the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets (5.4 rating, 5,306,000 households and 7,352,000 viewers).

Against Winter Olympics, NBA All-Star Game Down 10% to 6.85M Viewers

TNT’s telecast of the 2010 NBA All-Star Game drew 6.85 million viewers, down 10% from the year prior(7.62 million viewers).  Considering game aired against NBA’s highly rated coverage of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games (26.37 million viewers), this seems like a fairly solid hold.
