Next Mission: Impossible is a reboot? Won’t be called M:I IV + Casting rumors

The fourth Mission: Impossible film reportedly won’t carry the ‘IV’ tag [Variety]:

Insiders disclosed Thursday that the next film in the series won’t be called “Mission: Impossible IV.” It’s possible that the title won’t even include the familiar moniker (much as Christopher Nolan’s Batman sequel was simply titled “The Dark Knight”).

As part of the makeover, Par has closed a deal for Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker”) to star opposite Tom Cruise in the untitled pic, which director Brad Bird begins lensing this fall. Renner will play as big a role as Cruise.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, the film, directed by Brad Bird, will reportedly branch off from the formula established in the first three films (Cruise playing agent Ethan Hunt and working with a team of agents) to focus solely on the two agents: Cruise and Renner. Paramount expects Cruise to return for subsequent films, however, Renner could also play the central character in any follow-up.

Mission: Impossible (2011) — which is how I’ll refer to it for the time-being — is scheduled to hit theaters on December 16, 2011.
