Transformers: Dark of the Moon grosses record $97.85M for July 4th weekend ($115.89M 4-day); $180.65M domesic / $400.45M worldwide

Update: Article updated with final box office data.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon dominated the weekend box office with $97.852M from 4,088 theaters Friday-Sunday and $115.886M Friday-Monday. That breaks the previous July 4th weekend record held by 2004’s “Spider-Man 2” which opened to $88.156M (Fri-Sun). The opening is also the biggest of the year (ahead of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” — $90.152M).

Compared to its predecessors, ‘Dark of the Moon’ opened 39% above the 2007 original ($70.502M) and just 10% under the opening of 2009’s ‘Revenge of the Fallen’ ($108.966M). ‘Dark of the Moon’ grossed $175.151M through Monday ($180.651M including an estimated $5.5M from Tuesday night previews). Although not as strong as the second film in the franchise — which had grossed $214.931M through the comparable period three day period  — ‘Dark of the Moon’ is expected to ride strong word of mouth to become the year’s first $300M+ grosser.

The film is performing even more impressively overseas (which seems to be the norm these days with blockbusters), opening to $219.8M through Monday, putting the movie at an incredible $400.451M through the July 4th Holiday weekend.

Of the two other new releases, the Tom Hanks / Julia Roberts-starrer Larry Crowne finished on top in fourth place with $13.096M ($16.099M for the 4-day), ahead of the teen-centric romantic comedy Monte Carlo which grossed $7.454M for sixth place ($8.588M for the 4-day).

Rounding out the top five was Cars 2 in second place, sliding a disappointing 60% with $26.273M ($31.63M for the 4-day / $122.56M cume), Bad Teacher in third place with $14.507M ($17.262M for the 4-day / $62.708M cume) and Super 8 in fifth place easing just  34% with $7.922M ($9.527M for the 4-day / $110.07M cume). The J.J. Abrams-directed / Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi film crossed the $100M domestic mark on Thursday.

Other notable performances over the fold:

Movie trailer for Larry Crowne

Universal Pictures has released the first movie trailer for the romantic comedy Larry Crowne. Tom Hanks stars in and directed the film. Julia Roberts co-stars.

Synopsis

Oscar® winners Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts reunite for a dramatic comedy about how the hard knocks from today’s recession inspire one everyday guy to undergo a personal reinvention: Larry Crowne.

Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne (Hanks) was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he’s worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves…often moving around town in a herd of scooters. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband.

The simple guy who has every reason to think his life has stalled will come to learn an unexpected lesson: when you think everything worth having has passed you by, you just might discover your reason to live.

Larry Crowne is scheduled to hit theaters on July 1, 2011. Click over the jump to watch the trailer.
