Paramount Pictures became the first studio this year to cross $1B in domestic box office (Paramount Pictures International announced it crossed the $1B mark in overseas box office last month).

X-Men: First Class opened to a solid, albeit not very spectacular, $55,101,604 in its first weekend from 3,641 theaters. The film grossed $21.399M on Friday, added $19.713M on Saturday and ended the weekend with a $13.990 Sunday. There were no other new wide releasing films this weekend.

The Hangover Part II is a huge success for director Todd Phillips and stars. The Hangover Part II dropped only 5% on Friday, grossing an estimated $30.01M for an impressive $61.62M through two days. The film’s five-day gross (through Memorial Day Monday) is expected to top $135M and could even hit $140M. That’s an incredible start for the Todd Phillips-directed R-rated comedy which continues to break records.

DreamWorks Animation’s 3D Kung Fu Panda 2 will open the Sicily, Italy’s Taormina Film Festival June 11, 2011.

DreamWorks Animation’s theatrical release schedule is currently planned as follows: Kung Fu Panda 2 for May 26, 2011 and Puss In Boots for November 4, 2011; Madagascar 3 for June 8, 2012 and Rise of the Guardians for November 21, 2012; The Croods for March 1, 2013, Turbo for June 7, 2013 and Me and My Shadow for November 8, 2013; Mr. Peabody & Sherman for March 21, 2014 and How to Train Your Dragon 2 for June 20, 2014.

DreamWorks Animation has announced that Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss in Boots will both be released into IMAX theaters simultaneous with their conventional theater release.
Puss in Boots will have a two-week day-and-date release in IMAX theaters.
