Illustrator John Romita Jr. has revealed that deals have been completed for Kick Ass 2 and production is scheduled to begin this summer for a release sometime next May. At the moment it’s unclear who will be directing the project, as Matthew Vaughn is only signed to co-write and produce.

The Back-Up Plan stayed in first place on Wednesday with $832,377 ($14.902M cume), with How to Train Your Dragon taking second ($737,763 / $180.789M cume) and Kick-Ass in third with $703,031 ($37.021M cume).

The Back-Up Plan perked up 21% to take Tuesday with $1.024 million ($14.069M cume). How to Train Your Dragon was 2nd with $860,937 ($180.052M cume) while Kick-Ass took 3rd with $809,920 ($36.318M cume).

The top three films on Monday were separated by less than $45,000, with How to Train Your Dragon holding onto 1st place with $844,721 ($179.161M cume), The Back-Up Plan in 2nd with $843,885 ($13.046M cume) and Kick-Ass took 3rd with $800,248 ($35.508M cume).

The weak debuts of The Back-Up Plan (#2 – $12.2M) and The Losers (#4 – $9.4M) allowed for How to Train Your Dragon to win another weekend. The 3D feature grossed $15.35 million, pushing its domestic cume to a solid $178.346 million and its worldwide tally to an impressive $355.346 million. After opening more than 25% below Monsters vs. Aliens ($59.3M vs. $43.7M), ‘Dragon’ has surpassed ‘MvsA’ on a daily basis and will easily cross the $200M mark domestically.
The only other new release this week was the limited Oceans (which opened on Thursday) which grossed $6.059 million ($8.526M cume) for the weekend — #8 — from 1,206 theaters (for a top 10 best $5,024 per theater average). Rounding out the top five were Date Night in third place ($10.461M / $63.333M cume) and Kick-Ass in fifth place ($9.342M / $34.708M cume). Click over the jump for the weekend chart.

The Back-Up Plan and The Losers both opened up to disappointing numbers on Friday. The Back-Up Plan grossed an estimated $4.2 million for first place, while The Losers opened in fourth place with an estimated $3.245 million. Neither film will take the top position this weekend, that honor will go to How to Train Your Dragon which grossed an estimated $3.44 million ($166.436M cume) and should be at around $15-16 million for the weekend.
Rounding out the top five were Date Night in third place with an estimated $3.3 million ($56.172M cume) and Kick-Ass in fifth place with an estimated $2.85 million ($28.216M cume). Oceans, which opened on Thursday, fell 17.1% to eighth place with an estimated $2.045 million ($4.512M). Click over the jump for the daily chart.

Playing in just 1,206 theaters, Disney’s nature film Oceans opened in first place on Earth Day yesterday, grossing a solid $2.466 million. That’s a healthy $2,045 per theater average. The film has already opened in several markets overseas where it has grossed more than $54 million. Second place went to How to Train Your Dragon ($1.223M / $162.996M cume) which managed to pass up the under-performing Kick-Ass which took third place ($1.19M / $25.366M cume).

Kick- Ass remained in first place on Tuesday, but declined about 5% to $1.49 million (just one of two films to decline in the top 10). Its 5-day domestic cume now stands at $22.877 million. How to Train Your Dragon held steady in second place with $1.207 million ($160.665M cume) and Death at a Funeral was third with $1.178 million ($18.551M cume).

Kick-Ass climbed back up to the top spot on Monday, a small reward for a film which turned in a disappointing opening weekend, taking in $1.56 million and pushing its 4-day domestic cume to $21.389 million. Second place went to kid-friendly How to Train Your Dragon which grossed $1.206 million ($159.497M cume) and Death at a Funeral settled for third with $1.155 million ($17.372M cume).
