The news that Fox has canceled Dollhouse will no doubt be followed by disappointment from its fans, but really, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The show received a surprise second season renewal last year, but ratings have been extremely poor this season, going far below even last year’s weak numbers.

Fox may have announced last week that they intend to run all 13 episodes of Dollhouse this season, but that doesn’t mean they’ll air them as scheduled. The show returns tomorrow night after a one-week hiatus, but instead of airing throughout the sweeps period, it’ll return in December with back-to-back original episodes on December 4, [...]

The recently released DVR data was very good news for the low-rated Fox series Dollhouse. According to the data, it showed that the season two premiere increased an enormous 50%, going from a 1.0 A18-49 rating to a 1.5 A18-49 rating. I actually haven’t made my way through the first season of Dollhouse yet and it’s something I’m contemplating doing. For that reason, I’ve stayed away from spoilers involving the show except for the more basic things. Fox has confirmed that the season two premiere of Dollhouse will air on September 25th on Fox at 9:00pm ET/PT. The premiere episode was written and directed by series creator Joss Whedon. Full details are included after the jump via the press release.

UPDATED @ 8:20PM: It’s official. Both James Hibberd and Nikki Finke are reporting that Fox has officially given the show a second season.

James Hibberd of THR reports that his sources are telling him that “fans shouldn’t lose hope; that despite the show’s recent ratings, Dollhouse is still alive.”
