Kick-Ass took 1st place on Friday, but came in at below expectations with an opening day of an estimated $7.6 million from 3,065 theaters. That will put the film at about $18-20 million for the weekend, a fair amount below initial expectations of between a $25-30 million. No matter how strong its critical praise was — currently standing at a solid 77% on Rotten Tomatoes — the film wasn’t able to overcome Lionsgate’s horrible marketing campaign. Of course it’s possible strong word of mouth will improve its numbers over the coming days and weeks, but that’s no guarantee.
Finishing in 2nd place for the day was Sony’s Death at a Funeral with a so-so estimated $5.6 million from 2,459 theaters. Date Night had a strong hold from last weekend, taking in an estimated $5.465 million on Friday ($37.412M cume). Date Night will battle with Death at a Funeral for 2nd place for the weekend (with each finishing with between $16-17.5M).
Rounding out the top five was How to Train Your Dragon in 4th place with an estimated $4.4 million ($143.018M cume), edging out Clash of the Titans which finished in 5th place with an estimated $4.28 million ($121.495M cume). Click over the jump for the daily chart.
