Jay Leno Addresses Cancellation Rumors

During the taping for The Jay Leno Show, comedian Jay Leno addressed the cancellation rumors during his opening monologue.  On that point, NBC has responded to the cancellation / rumors of Leno moving back to 11:30 p.m.:

NBC executives held discussions with both Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien Thursday about the future of the network’s late-night lineup. And while executives said that no final decision has been made, they did not deny that the network is considering moves that could include returning Mr. Leno to his old job as host of “The Tonight Show.”

And here’s TMZ‘s report about Leno moving back to 11:30 p.m.:

We’ve learned Jay’s 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided — whether Jay’s show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay’s show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O’Brien.

Broadcasting & Cable reports that the network will come to their decision before a January 21st affiliates meeting. Watch the bit from The Jay Leno Show after the jump.

Conan O’Brien Finishes Well Ahead of Letterman In First Week as Tonight Show Host

The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien drew an average 2.3/10 A18-49 rating/share for the week, easily out-rating the 0.9/4 A18-49 rating/share earned by Late Show with David Letterman.

“This is beyond our wildest expectations,” said Rick Ludwin, executive vp, late night and primetime series, NBC Entertainment. “Conan has brought new younger viewers to 11:35 pm and we’re gratified that the demographic trend has continued here in week two, where the early numbers continue to show dominant victories, in all the key categories, for ‘The Tonight Show’.”
