Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 grosses entertainment record $775M worldwide in five days

Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 — available now for Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony Playstation 3, PC, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS — has grossed a record-breaking $750M worldwide in just five days of release.

Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc., announced today that Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 has shattered theatrical box office, book and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell-through in dollars. The game established an all-new five-day worldwide sell-through record of more than $775 million , exceeding the record of $650 million set a year ago by Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops and $550 million two years ago for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare® 2, according to Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information.

Netflix renaming DVD by mail service to Qwikster + Adding Video Game rentals

Netflix Co-Founder and CEO, Reed Hastings announced on the official Netflix blog that the company is renaming its DVD by mail service to Qwikster. They’re also going to be adding Video Games rentals to the mix. Netflix, meanwhile, will focus only on streaming.

Call of Duty: Black Ops best-selling video game in history

Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops again led the video game charts in February, and in doing so, passed up “Wii Play” as the best-selling video game in history according to NPD.

Nintendo announces new Super Mario game, + AT&T and Netflix collaborations for Nintendo 3DS

A new 3D game from Nintendo’s iconic Super Mario series is in the works for the Nintendo 3DS™ portable system. Nintendo also announced two upcoming collaborations: Nintendo 3DS owners will be able to connect automatically to the Internet at more than 10,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots, while Netflix members will instantly stream movies and other content on their Nintendo 3DS systems. These features were announced today at the Game Developers Conference during Nintendo President Satoru Iwata’s keynote address, titled “Video Games Turn 25: A Historical Perspective and Vision for the Future.”

Nintendo announces March 27 release date for glasses-free 3D Nintendo 3DS

The company that changed the world of video games with touch-screen gaming in 2004 and motion-controlled gaming in 2006 now pioneers the next dimensional shift. On March 27, Nintendo introduces portable entertainment in 3D – without the need for special glasses. The Nintendo 3DS™ system will be available in either Cosmo Black or Aqua Blue, and will have a suggested retail price of $249.99. Pricing outside the United States will be established by the local markets, but offer similar consumer value.

Neil Patrick Harris to host Spike TV’s 2010 Video Game Awards

Acclaimed television, film, stage and video game star Neil Patrick Harris has been handed over the controller and will host Spike TV’s 2010 “Video Game Awards.” Broadcasting in over 175 territories worldwide from Los Angeles, the “VGAs” will celebrate the best in gaming on Saturday, December 11 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

“Neil is a big gamer and a brilliant host,” said Casey Patterson, executive producer Spike TV’s “Video Game Awards.” “Video games are taking over the world and Neil is perfect to lead the ‘VGA’s’ in celebrating the best of the year and the future of gaming.”
