Mike Fleming of Deadline New York is reporting that due to the success of Despicable Me (which opened to an impressive $56.4M this past weekend) Universal Pictures is moving forward with a sequel:

‘Harold & Kumar’ writers to direct American Pie 4; Todd Strauss Schulson to direct A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas

THR’s Risky Business blog is reporting that ‘Harold & Kumar‘ writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg will direct and write American Pie 4, Universal’s upcoming reboot of the R-rated comedy franchise. The site also reports that the move sets the stage for newcomer Todd Strauss Schulson to direct A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, the third film in the ‘Harold & Kumar’ franchise (also written by Hurwitz and Schlossberg).

MacGruber red band trailer #2

Universal Pictures has released a second red band trailer for MacGruber, the upcoming R-rated comedy based on the Saturday Night Live skit of the same name. Will Forte, Ryan Phillippe and Kristen Wiig star.  Watch the new trailer after the jump.

MacGruber is scheduled to hit theaters on May 21, 2010.

Several new trailers have been released this morning, they include trailer #2 for both Salt (7/23/2010) and The A-Team (6/11/2010) as well as the trailer for Iron Man 2: The IMAX Experience (May 7, 2010).  I’ve also included a new poster for The A-Team and trailers for Knight & Day (6/25/2010) and Step Up 3D (8/6/2010) which were released over the last few days. Angelina Jolie also passed on Cuarón’s Gravity

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed Vulture’s report about Angelina Jolie not reprising her role in Wanted 2, but the site adds that Vulture was not right when they reported that Jolie opted to do Alfonso Cuarón’s space thriller Gravity instead:

Taylor Lautner drops Max Steel to make Stretch Armstrong

NY Mag’s Vulture blog is reporting that Taylor Lautner (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) has chosen to make Hasbro’s Stretch Armstrong for Universal Pictures over Paramount Picture’s Max Steel (based on the Mattell toy).  The actor was attached to both projects.  Here’s Vulture’s accounting of why Lautner chose to do Stretch Armstrong rather than Max Steel:

But in the weeks after signing on to play Steel, Lautner became increasingly convinced that Hasbro was playing its hand better than Mattel. Thanks to WME, Hasbro was moving with far greater speed through Hollywood’s development maze than Mattel, not only setting up projects, but quickly moving them forward.
