ESPN announces 2012 Monday Night Football preseason schedule

ESPN will televise four NFL games as part of its 2012 Monday Night Football preseason schedule. Play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico and analyst Jon Gruden will call every game in anticipation of ESPN’s MNF regular-season opener on Monday, Sept. 10. All MNF preseason games will begin at 8 p.m. ET.

The season kicks off Thursday, August 9, when Aaron Rodgers and the NFC North champion Green Bay Packers travel to San Diego to face Philip Rivers and the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium.

Super Bowl Champion New York Giants host Dallas Cowboys on NFL Kickoff 2012, Wednesday, September 5 at 8:30 p.m. on NBC

The Super Bowl champion New York Giants host NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys in NFL Kickoff 2012, the opening game of the 2012 NFL season, it was announced today by the NFL. NFL Kickoff 2012 will be played on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 8:30 p.m. ET, with coverage on NBC beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The 2011 regular season ended on Sunday Night Football with the Giants defeating the Cowboys, 31-14, to capture the NFC East title. That game averaged 27.6 million viewers, the most ever for a Sunday Night Football game (Thursday openers included), and the most-watched regular-season primetime game on any network in 15 years (Packers-Cowboys, 31.5 million, Nov. 18, 1996 on ABC).

2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship on TBS, CBS, TNT and truTv most-watched tournament in 18 years

CBS Sports and Turners Sports’ exclusive coverage of the 2012 NCAA® Division I Men’s Basketball Championship across TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV is the most-watched tournament in 18 years.

This year’s event is averaging a 5.3 U.S. HH rating through Saturday, up 4% compared with a 5.1 rating in 2011 and an increase of 15% over a 4.6 rating in 2010 (according to Nielsen Fast Nationals). The corresponding average of eight million viewers this year is +3% over last year’s 7.8 million viewers and +14% compared with seven million viewers in 2010.

The 2012 Daytona 500 is most-watched in Fox history; Averages 13.7M total viewes

A total audience of over 36.5 million Americans watched last night’s race, according to fast national ratings issued today by Nielsen Media Research, making 2012 Daytona 500 the most-watched in FOX history. The 36.5 million total viewers, a measure of the audience that saw at least a portion of the race, is +22% higher than last year’s total audience of 30 million and +22% better than 2010’s 29.8 million. Yesterday’s total audience is the second best ever for a Daytona 500 on any network behind 37.0 million viewers in 2006 on NBC.

The 2012 Great American Race, which included a fiery crash caused when Juan Pablo Montoya hit a safety truck/track-drying engine and red flagged the race for over two hours, earned an 8.0/14 rating/share and averaged 13.7 million viewers. While down slightly from last year’s Sunday afternoon race that occurred without any significant delays, (-8%, 2011 Daytona 500 – 8.7/20), Monday night’s race was up +4% when compared to the 2010 event (7.7/16), which saw lengthy delays for pothole repairs to the track.

Super Bowl XLVI set a record for Hispanic viewership with an average of 10.4 million Hispanic fans tuning in, according to data from The Nielsen Company.

Super Bowl XLVI reached 166.8M viewers in the U.S.

The 2011 NFL season concluded with another television milestone as Super Bowl XLVI on NBC reached a total audience of 166.8 million viewers, making it the most-watched show in U.S. television history according to The Nielsen Company.

The Giants-Patriots championship game topped the previous record of 162.9 million total viewers set last year (Packers-Steelers in Super Bowl XLV) and marks the fifth consecutive record-setting total audience for the Super Bowl. Super Bowls account for the 21 most-watched programs in history in terms of total audience.

NFL announces five additional games for NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football

NFL Network will televise five additional regular-season games in 2012 as part of its Thursday Night Football package, NFL CommissionerROGER GOODELL announced today.

The Thursday Night Football schedule on NFL Network will now feature 13 games, all on Thursdays, from Weeks 2-15 (skipping Week 12). In previous years, the NFLN slate included at least one Saturday night game. NBC will televise the Thursday night game on Thanksgiving in Week 12, in addition to the NFL Kickoff game.

Most-watched NFL Conference Championship Sunday in 30 years; 53.7M viewer average

Football fans across America continue to tune in to NFL games, resulting in the most-watched conference championship Sunday in 30 years. An average of 53.7 million viewers watched NFL games last weekend, the most for an NFL conference championship Sunday since January 1982 (game-by-game comparison below).

The New York Giants-San Francisco 49ers NFC Championship Game on FOX drew 57.6 million viewers to rank as the third most-watched conference championship game ever (chart below).

The Baltimore Ravens-New England Patriots AFC Championship Game on CBS drew 48.7 million viewers. The conference championship games are television’s two most-watched shows since Super Bowl XLV.

35.6M viewers tune in to 49ers/Saints duel; Most-watched Saturday NFL Divisional Playoff game since 1988

As Alex Smith hit Vernon Davis on a game-winning, 14-yard TD pass just moments after Drew Brees and the high-powered Saints took the lead, 35.6 million viewers witnessed one of the NFL’s proudest franchise’s secure its first playoff victory in nine years. In addition to being the most-watched Saturday Divisional Playoff since 1988, the game’s 20.5/38 fast-national household rating/share makes it the highest-rated Saturday Divisional Game on any network since 1996 (Packers at 49ers 22.2/42/32.0 million viewers) and is an impressive +21% increase over last year’s Packers at Falcons Saturday night match-up on FOX which earned a 17.0/29 and 30.8 million viewers.

NBA season opens with Christmas Day showcases between Mavericks/Heat & Bulls/Lakers

Christmas Day will mark the opening of the 2011-12 NBA season with a special showcase including a blockbuster doubleheader on ABC – a Finals rematch when the NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks and Dirk Nowitzki host the Miami Heat and All-Stars LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on Sunday, Dec. 25, at 2:30 p.m. ET, followed by the Chicago Bulls and league MVP Derrick Rose visiting the Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant at 5 p.m. The Kia NBA Countdown pregame show will preview the ABC doubleheader at 2 p.m.
