NBA Finals delivers highest-rated, most-viewed Game 1 ever on ABC with 16.2M viewers

The 2012 NBA Finals – Oklahoma City Thunder defeated Miami Heat to take 1-0 series lead – delivered the highest-rated, most-viewed Game 1 in ABC history. It generated a 9.9 household rating, 16,195,000 viewers (P2+) and 11,318,000 household impressions, all records, according to Nielsen.

The records surpass the previous marks set for Game 1 of the 2004 Finals – Detroit Pistons at Los Angeles Lakers – 9.8 rating, 15,352,000 viewers and 10,634,000 households. Last night’s game was also the highest-rated telecast of the night, propelling ABC to win the night across all networks (broadcast and cable) in viewership, household impressions and all key demos.

ESPN has highest-rated, most-viewed NBA Playoffs ever

The 2012 NBA Playoffs generated record ratings and viewership on ESPN, led by the Eastern Conference Finals, which delivered the network’s highest-rated, most-viewed NBA series ever, according to Nielsen. It averaged a 6.2 US household rating, matching the highest-rated Conference Finals ever on cable, and was up 44 percent compared to ESPN’s coverage of the 2011 Western Conference Finals (4.3). The series averaged 10,144,000 viewers (P2+), up 46 percent from 2011 (6,939,000) and up 43 percent in household impressions from 2011 (4,987,000).

7.67M watch Belmont on NBC

NBC’ broadcast of the Belmont Stakes, which was won by Union Rags, drew 7.67 million viewers, a gain of 12 percent from last year’s race (6.84 million on NBC), and up 62% from the 2010 race (4.74 million on ABC). Saturday’s Belmont was the most-watched in a non-Triple Crown year since 2005 on NBC, less than one percent lower than the 7.71 million that year, according to official national data provided today by The Nielsen Company.

Belmont Stakes on NBC up 13% over last year

Overnight ratings for the Belmont Stakes on NBC soared, despite the scratch of Triple Crown-hopeful I’ll Have Another, topping last year’s overnight by 13%, and the 2010 overnight by 74%. Yesterday’s overnight rating is the highest for a non-Triple Crown Belmont since 2005 on NBC.NBC’ broadcast of the Belmont Stakes, which was won by Union Rags, registered a 5.4 overnight rating and an 13 share for the race portion, up 13 percent from last year’s race (4.8/11 on NBC), and up 74% from the 2010 race (3.1/7 on ABC). Yesterday’s Belmont had the highest overnight for the race in a non-Triple Crown year since 2005 on NBC (6.0/13), according to overnight ratings data provided today by The Nielsen Company.

Eastern Conference Finals Game 4 on ESPN delivers highest overnight rating for NBA Playoff game ever on Cable

Sunday night’s NBA Eastern Conference Finals Game 4 on ESPN – in which Boston defeated Miami in overtime to even their series 2-2 – delivered a 7.9 overnight rating, the highest ever for an NBA playoff game on cable (records back to 2003), according to Nielsen. The game peaked with a 10.7 rating during overtime.

2013 NFL Pro Bowl to be played in Hawaii Sunday, January 27 on NBC

The 2013 Pro Bowl will be played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii for the 33rd time, the NFL and NFL Players Association announced today. The game will be televised live on Sunday, January 27 on NBC at 7 PM ET and again serve as the signature event to kick off the week leading up to the Super Bowl. CBS will televise Super Bowl XLVII a week later on Sunday, February 3 from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

HBO announces Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Miami Dolphins

HBO Sports, NFL Films and the Miami Dolphins team up for an all-access look at what it takes to make it in the National Football League when HARD KNOCKS: TRAINING CAMP WITH THE MIAMI DOLPHINS debuts in August. The first sports-based reality series – and one of the fastest-turnaround reality series – kicks off its five-episode seventh season, presented in HD, TUESDAY, AUG. 7 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO. Other hour-long episodes debut subsequent Tuesdays at the same time, with an encore play every Wednesday in August at 11:00 p.m., culminating in the Sept. 4 season finale.

UEFA Champions League Final on FOX Sports is second most-watched ever with 2M viewers

Chelsea had been out-played for most of the match, but only trailed Bayern Munich 1-0 in the 2012 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL until lightning struck in the 88th minute and Didier Drogba tied the score with a header off a corner kick. Thirty minutes of scoreless, dramatic extra-time ensued forcing the most prestigious title in European club soccer to be settled by penalty kicks. Again, it was Drogba who connected on the game’s final shot giving Chelsea the 4-3 victory and the European crown.

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Conference semifinals are most-watched on record

The NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the first two rounds of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs have averaged 1.06 million viewers, making the Conference Quarterfinals and Conference Semifinals the most-watched first two rounds on record (sine 1994, when cable program data started). On NBC, NBC Sports Network and CNBC, the 2012 Conference Semifinals averaged 1.32 million viewers, making them the most-watched Conference Semifinals on record. More than 39 million total viewers have watched the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs on NBC, NBC Sports Network and CNBC, up 23% vs. last year (32.2).

Mayweather-Cotto registers 1.5M Pay-Per-View buys; $94M in revenue

HBO Sports® reported today that 1.5 million pay-per-view buys were generated from the May 5 super welterweight title fight between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.

14.8M watch Kentucky Derby on NBC

NBC Sports’ coverage of Saturday’s Kentucky Derby drew 14.8 million viewers, the third most-watched Kentucky Derby in 23 years, and up two percent from last year’s Derby according to official national data provided today by The Nielsen Company. The household rating of 9.0/20 is up six percent from last year’s race. Since implementing NBC Sports’ ‘Big Event Strategy,’ the last four Kentucky Derby races have all recorded at least 14.5 million viewers.
