Netflix and Disney-ABC Television Group announce Extension of existing licensing agreement to stream TV shows

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) and Disney-ABC Television Group [announced] that they recently entered into an extension of their previous existing licensing agreement. The extension allows Netflix to continue to stream hundreds of library episodes from ABC Studios, Disney Channel and ABC Family over the Internet. As part of the deal, Netflix is also adding new content to its lineup of Disney-ABC series and TV movies.

The CW and Hulu signd five-year licensing agreement

The CW Television Network, a joint venture of CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Entertainment, announced today a five-year licensing agreement with Hulu for the rights to stream in-season episodes of The CW’s programming on the Hulu Plus subscription service and the free, ad-supported Hulu service.

Netflix to launch service in the UK and Ireland for streaming movies and TV shows in early 2012

Netflix, Inc. Hulu announces decision to terminate Hulu sale process

Hulu has announced that they’re calling off the sale of the company. Here’s the statement:

“Since Hulu holds a unique and compelling strategic value to each of its owners, we have terminated the sale process and look forward to working together to continue mapping out its path to even greater success. Our focus now rests solely on ensuring that our efforts as owners contribute in a meaningful way to the exciting future that lies ahead for Hulu.”

Netflix signs 4-year licensing deal with The CW

CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Television Group announced today a licensing agreement with Netflix [Nasdaq: NFLX] allowing U.S. members of Netflix to instantly watch previous seasons of scripted series that air on The CW from its current schedule through the 2014-15 season.

Netflix scraps plans to create DVD-only service Qwikster

Well that was quick. Netflix has scrapped plans to launch a new service, called Qwikster, that would separate out their DVD rental service from the main Netflix account and add video game rentals to the fold. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings made the announcement at the official Netflix blog:

It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password… in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

Netflix acquiring Norwegian-produced drama Lilyhammer

Netflix has announced that they’ve acquired the Norwegian-produced mob drama Lilyhammer. The series stars Stevie Van Zandt (“The Sopranos”). The series’ eight-episode first season (which has already aired) will premiere on Netflix in early 2012 along with the upcoming eight-episode second season [via Deadline]:

DISH announces Blockbuster Movie Pass

DISH Network L.L.C. and Blockbuster L.L.C. announced today Blockbuster Movie Pass, the most comprehensive TV entertainment programming package ever delivered by a multichannel pay TV provider.

Beginning Oct. 1, 2011, Blockbuster Movie Pass is available for DISH Network customers, starting at $10 per month, combining the best of TV with the best of movies and games. Netflix renaming DVD by mail service to Qwikster + Adding Video Game rentals

Netflix Co-Founder and CEO, Reed Hastings announced on the official Netflix blog that the company is renaming its DVD by mail service to Qwikster. They’re also going to be adding Video Games rentals to the mix. Netflix, meanwhile, will focus only on streaming.
