Marvel will recast Hulk for The Avengers; Edward Norton releases statement + Joaquin Phoenix rumored for the role

Edward Norton, who starred as Bruce Banner / the Hulk in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, will not reprise his role as the character in the upcoming The Avengers, Marvel announced. The studio’s president Kevin Feige made the official statement [HitFix]:

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

The harsh wording resulted in a quick rebuttal from Norton’s agent and finally a polite and classy statement from Edward Norton himself. Click over the jump for those plus news on a rumor that has Joaquin Phoenix taking on the role.

Marvel considering Channing Tatum for Captain America

The search for the actor to play Captain America / Steve Rogers in Joe Johnston’s The First Avenger: Captain America is still ongoing, and Mike Fleming of Deadline New York reports that Marvel Studios has expanded their search to include Channing Tatum (“G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”):

I’m told that Marvel has also made an approach to Channing Tatum. Coming off G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra and Dear John, I would be surprised if he went in to test for the role., now that he’s become a bankable commodity. It’ll come down to Marvel making an offer, and Tatum either accepting it or rejecting it. But he is definitely in the mix, along with other confirmed candidates that include Fantastic Four’s Chris Evans, Cloverfield’s Mike Vogel and Tron Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund, and Generation Kill’s Wilson Bethel.
