Universal Pictures’ Snow White and the Huntsman opened to a better than expected first place $20.3M from 3,773 theaters on Friday en route to what should be an impressive $55-60M opening weekend. ‘Huntsman’ easily held off last week’s number 1 MIB 3 which fell to second place with an estimated $8.3M from 4,248 theaters ($91.304M cume). MIB 3 is currently tracking a touch below its predecessors (“Men in Black” was at $104.4M after its eighth day and “Men in Black II” was at $103.9M). MIB 3 will should close its second weekend in the neighborhood of $25-30M.
Meanwhile, The Avengers was third on Friday with an estimated $5.7M to bring its domestic cume to $538.116M and good enough for #3 on the all time domestic list (ahead of “The Dark Knight” at $533.345M). The Avengers also moved up to #3 on the all time worldwide chart — $1.331B — passing up “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2″ ($1.328B).
Rounding out the top five on Friday were What to Expect When You’re Expecting in fourth place with an estimated $1.45M ($27.743M cume) and Battleship in fifth place with an estimated $1.4M ($51.713M cume).
Also worth noting: The Weinstein Company’s Piranha 3DD was released on Friday — day-and-date with video-on-demand — but only did $63,000 from just 86 theaters.
