The Avengers beat expectations again with an easy first place estimated $29.124M (est. $299.143M cume) dwarfing the competition including newcomer Dark Shadows. The Tim Burton-directed / Johnny Depp-starring comedy thriller opened to a so-so estimated $9.72M from 3,755 theaters and will probably open somewhere in the neighborhood of $28-30M for the weekend.
The big box office continues to be centered on The Avengers, however, which has a legitimate shot at grossing $100M this weekend (it’ll safely be somewhere around $90-100M). With its second weekend performing so impressively, Marvel’s The Avengers will topĀ 2009’s “Avatar” to become the new record-holder for biggest second weekend (“Avatar” grossed $75.617M in its second weekend).
Overseas box office also showed no signs of slowing down yesterday, adding an estimated $21.9M and pushing its 17-day foreign cume to $555.2M and its worldwide cume to $854.3M.
