$29.1M for The Avengers en route to possible $100M weekend + Dark Shadows 2nd with $9.7M Friday

The Avengers beat expectations again with an easy first place estimated $29.124M (est. $299.143M cume) dwarfing the competition including newcomer Dark Shadows. The Tim Burton-directed / Johnny Depp-starring comedy thriller opened to a so-so estimated $9.72M from 3,755 theaters and will probably open somewhere in the neighborhood of $28-30M for the weekend.

CBS renews Two and a Half Men for 10th season

CBS announced today that Two and a Half Men has been renewed for the 2012-2013 broadcast season.

The renewal comes after new agreements were reached for next season with series producer Warner Bros. Television and cast members Ashton Kutcher, Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones.

History renews Top Gear U.S. for a third season

HISTORY announced today that the new season of the U.S. version of Top Gear is beginning production. The second season of the critically-acclaimed and popular series broke into the millionaire’s club with 1.1 million Adults 25-54 and 18-49 (+30 and +22 vs. S1, respectively) and is the youngest skewing series on HISTORY. Season Two was seen by nearly 60 million viewers.

ABC renews Scandal, Private Practice, Happy Endings and Don’t Trust The B—- in Apt. 23; GCB canceled

ABC has renewed both Scandal and Don’t Trust The B—– in Apt. 23 for second seasons. The network also renewed comedy Happy Endings for a third season as well as Private Practice for a sixth season. Scandal creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes confirmed the pickup for Scandal via her Twitter page:

Mayweather-Cotto registers 1.5M Pay-Per-View buys; $94M in revenue

HBO Sports® reported today that 1.5 million pay-per-view buys were generated from the May 5 super welterweight title fight between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.

Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron, Prometheus is scheduled to hit conventional, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters on June 8, 2012.
