As expected, The Avengers added $12.391M on Thursday to close its first week of domestic release — Friday-Thursday — at a record-setting $270.019M. The previous record was set by 2008’s “The Dark Knight” which grossed $238.615M in its first week of release.
The Avengers also continued its impressive run in foreign markets, adding another $15.5M and pushing its foreign cume to $533.3M through 16 days. In total, The Avengers has grossed $803.319M worldwide. With a weekend gross expected in the $80-100M range domestically, incredibly, Marvel’s The Avengers could be at $1B in global box office by the end of the weekend. Amazing.
In other box office news, Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows did $550,000 from midnight screenings and looks headed to about ~$10M Friday and $30-35M for the weekend.
