The Avengers doesn’t open domestically until this Friday, but the Joss Whedon-directed blockbuster got off to an early huge start overseas, grossing an estimated $178.4 million from 39 markets. The Avengers was first in every market but did the majority of its conventional and 3D business in the United Kingdom ($24.7M), Australia ($19.7M — #2 all-time) and Mexico ($15.9M — #1 all-time). Records were also set in Brazil ($11.3M), Taiwan ($7.7M), the Philippines ($6.5M) and Hong Kong ($4.6M). Other markets where the film started strong included South Korea ($12.9M), France ($12.7M), Italy ($10.4M) and Spain ($7.3M).
So where is The Avengers headed as we approach the film’s domestic launch? Well considering the foreign launch doesn’t include China, Japan and Russia — in addition to the U.S. of course — The Avengers has a possible shot at hitting $1B worldwide.
