Official: Gary Ross drops out of The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire

Gary Ross has announced that due to time constraints he will not be able to direct Catching Fire, the upcoming sequel to The Hunger Games:

Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct Catching Fire. As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule.

HBO renews Game of Thrones for a third season

HBO has renewed GAME OF THRONES for a third season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming.

“Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss raised our expectations for the second season – and then surpassed them,” said Lombardo. “We are thrilled by all the viewer and media support we’ve received for the series, and can’t wait to see what Dan and David have in store for next season.”

The Dictator pushed back five days to May 16

Paramount Pictures has shifted Larry Charles’ Sacha Baron Cohen comedy The Dictator from Friday, May 11 to Wednesday, May 16. The Dictator will now go up against Universal’s “Battleship” instead of Warner Brothers’ “Dark Shadows”.

Fox renews New Girl, Raising Hope and Glee

FOX has ordered a second season of freshman breakout hit New Girl, a third installment of the irreverent family comedy Raising Hope and a fourth season of the genre-defying musical sensation Glee, it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.

“Over the past season, New Girl has become the hottest new appointment series for young adults; Raising Hope has established itself as one of the smartest and most unique offbeat comedies on television; and Glee has continued its success as a genre-defying, global cultural phenomenon,” said Reilly. “All three of these comedies add a fresh and distinctive flavor to our Tuesday nights, and I’m really happy to bring them back to our air next season.”

ESPN announces 2012 Monday Night Football preseason schedule

ESPN will televise four NFL games as part of its 2012 Monday Night Football preseason schedule. Play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico and analyst Jon Gruden will call every game in anticipation of ESPN’s MNF regular-season opener on Monday, Sept. 10. All MNF preseason games will begin at 8 p.m. ET.

The season kicks off Thursday, August 9, when Aaron Rodgers and the NFC North champion Green Bay Packers travel to San Diego to face Philip Rivers and the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium.

CBS renews Late Show and Late Late Show through 2014

CBS has reached agreements with David Letterman and Craig Ferguson for contract extensions to host their respective late night franchises – LATE SHOW and THE LATE LATE SHOW – through 2014, it was announced today by Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment. Both series are produced by Worldwide Pants, Inc.

During the course of this agreement, Letterman, who premiered in late night in 1982, would become the longest-running late night talk show host in television history, surpassing the current record of 30 years by Johnny Carson.

Neil Patrick Harris returning to host The 66th Annual Tony Awards

Emmy Award-winning actor Neil Patrick Harris, star of the CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother, returns to host THE 66TH ANNUAL TONY® AWARDS, to be broadcast live from The Beacon Theater in New York, Sunday, June 10 (8:00-11:00 PM, live ET; delayed PT) on the CBS Television Network. This will be the third time that Harris has hosted the TONY Awards, previously serving as host for both THE 63RD ANNUAL TONY AWARDS in 2009 and THE 65TH ANNUAL TONY AWARDS in 2011. As he did in 2011, Harris will also act as a producer, along with executive producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment.
