Strong weekend box office led by The Vow ($41.2M), Safe House (40.2M), ‘Journey 2’ (27.3M) and ‘The Phantom Menace 3D’ ($22.5M)

Hollywood had a great box office weekend, led by the strong 1-2 punch of The Vow, which pulled in $41.202M from 2,958 theaters and Safe House ($40.173M from 3,119 theaters). Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, meanwhile, came in above expectations in 3rd place with $27.335M from 3,470 2D and 3D theaters. The film opened 30% stronger than 2008’s ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ ($21.018M).

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D also had a powerful opening weekend. Tacking on $22.470M from 2,655 theaters. ‘Phantom Menace’ moved from seventh to fifth place on the all-time domestic chart with $453.558M with the 3D re-release.
