Disney’s 3D rerelease of The Lion King over-performed expectations with a strong $30.152M from 2,330 theaters for a per theater average of $12,941. The film easily led the weekend, holding off both newcomers and last week’s number one Contagion which dropped to second place with $14.548M from 3,222 theaters ($44.261M total).

Among September openings The Lion King (in 3D) ranks 4th all-time behind “Sweet Home Alabama” ($35.649M), “Rush Hour” ($33.002M) and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” ($30.305M).
Including the original 1994 release ($312.856M) and 2002’s IMAX rerelease ($15.686M), The Lion King’s total domestic lifetime gross now stands at $358.693M (#17 all-time).
The three other new releases: Drive (#3 / $11.340M); Straw Dogs (#5 / $5.124M) and I Don’t Know How She Does It (#6 / $4.402M) all under-performed. The Help rounded out the top five in fourth place with another $6.513M as it closes in on $150M ($147.435M total).
