The Help opens with $5.5M Wednesday

Update: The Help pulled in a solid first place $5.540M on Wednesday slightly ahead of ‘Rise of the Apes’ which was second with $4.914M.

Original article follows below

With a mid-week launch, The Help got an early jump on the competition as it appears headed to a solid $5M Wednesday from 2,511 theaters according to early estimates.

The $25M-budgeted drama, an adaptation of the Kathryn Stockett novel, is expected to clear somewhere around $25M through Sunday.

Friday sees the openings of 30 Minutes or Less (2,600 theaters), Final Destination 5 (at least 3,100 theaters) and Glee The 3D Concert Movie (1,800 theaters) along with week two of Rise of the Planet of the Apes so an early start for The Help was a good move to get the film out in front of its competition.

‘Planet of the Apes’, however, continues to hum along with strong box office (grossing $6.673M on Tuesday for a 5-day cume of $68.132M) and may still win Wednesday. ‘Apes’ is expected to go head-to-head with Final Destination 5 for the #1 weekend title.
