Deadline reports that J.J. Abrams is moving closer to sign on to direct a sequel to the 2009 sci-fi hit Star Trek, but the studio will be shifting the film out of its current June 29, 2012 release date. Justin Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation (note the new title) will be moved up from its former August release date into Star Trek’s slot.
The Star Trek sequel won’t be released until the 4th quarter 2012 — at the earliest — or summer 2013 (the more likely scenario).
