Transformers Dark of the Moon continues to light the box office on fire. The film has grossed nearly $215M domestically ($213.975 as of July 7) and is approaching $300M internationally ($297.084M) for what is currently an incredible $511.06M worldwide.
The Michael Bay-directed blockbuster crossed the $500M worldwide mark on Thursday its ninth day of release. That broke the former 10-day record held by “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”. ‘Dark of the Moon’ still lags ‘Revenge of the Fallen’ in domestic box office during the same time period ($239.38M thru day 8), but the film is crushing its predecessor overseas, with Dark of the Moon’s on pace to surpass the entire overseas gross of ‘Revenge of the Fallen’ by sometime next week ($434.2M). Additionally, ‘Dark of the Moon’ only today opened in China and won’t open in Japan until July 29. Those two markets alone contributed nearly $90M to Revenge of the Fallen’s overseas gross.
Although it still may be too early to say it with absolute certainty, ‘Dark of the Moon’ looks likely to break $1B worldwide, especially if it can hold its own against ‘Deathly Hallows 2’, which hits theaters next Friday.
