Warner Brothers’ The Hangover Part II grossed a live-action comedy record-breaking $103.427M over the 4-day Memorial Day holiday weekend. All-in-all, the film led the weekend to to its biggest ever, with $280M in grosses.
The 3-day box office for The Hangover Part II was $85.946M (Fri-Sun). The 5-day cume (the film opened on Thursday) is an impressive $135.037M. Foreign receipts added $59M to the tally, bringing its worldwide cume to nearly $200M ($194.037M to be exact).
The other new (wide) release of the weekend was Paramount’s Kung Fu Panda 2 which grossed $47.656M for the 3-day and $60.871M for the 4-day. It too, however, opened on Thursday, so its 5-day cume stands at $66.675M. The animated sequel added $57M in foreign grosses for a current worldwide cume of $123.675M.
Rounding out the top five for the weekend (3-day /4-day) was Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in third place with $39.829M / $50.012M ($163.608M domestic / $470.8M foreign / $634.408M worldwide), Bridesmaids in fourth place with $16.551M / $20.737M ($89.343M domestic / $110,542 foreign / $89.454M worldwide) and Thor in fourth place with $9.538M / $12.080M ($162.439M domestic / $249.510M foreign / $411.950M worldwide).
Also worth noting: Woody Allen’s romantic comedy Midnight in Paris expanded to 58 theaters (from 6) and notched an impressive $33,268 per theater average for a $1.930M 3-day and a $2.555M 4-day ($44,055 PTA). The $30M film has grossed $3.460M in two weeks of limited release. It has added $11.530M from foreign receipts for a worldwide cume of $14.990M.
And finally, Fast Five grossed a respectable sixth place for the weekend with $6.409M for the 3-day and $7.900M for the 4-day weekend. That pushes its domestic cume just shy of $200M at $197.309M and its worldwide cume to $531.710M ($334.401M foreign).
